The San Bernardino Historical & Pioneer Society with help from the Highland Historical Society and the Wrightwood Historical Society has recreated the Camp Cajon Monument at the site of Camp Cajon, for Camp Cajon's 100th Anniversary.. The monument will be dedicated at 10am on July 4th. Allen Bone President of the San Bernardino Historical & Pioneer Society, and San Bernardino History & Railroad Museum, along with historian and author Mark Landis, and historian John Leneau of the Wrightwood Historical Society, worked with the U.S. Forest Service, County of San Bernardino, State of California and Bureau of Land Management to return the historical monument to Camp Cajon. Historian and Board Member Joe Moya, who has thirty years experience as a stone mason, led the construction with two of his co-workers, Raymond Legano and Steve Ramos, to professionally construct the monument of river cobbles, copying the original.

The Camp Cajon Monument is located next to the Salt Lake Monument at the south end of Wagon Train Road off the Junction of Highway 138 and I-215. If you plan to attend the July 4th dedication at 10am, bring your own chair and be prepared for a hot morning. There is no water available, and no shade, but restaurants are available nearby.

The original Camp Cajon was washed away in the 1938 floods. [www.sbsun.com] [www.highlandnews.net]

Highly recommend the book The Man Who Built Camp Cajon by Sandy and John Hockaday. [www.buckthornpublishing.com]

Also recommend their book From Indian Footpath to Modern Highway. [www.buckthornpublishing.com]

John Hockaday made an appearance while re-construction was going on and likely will be at the dedication, if you want to get your books signed.

Sure wish Chard Walker, Bill Garner, Jack Whitmeyer and a few others could have lived to see this.
