Triple Header Westbound on the Sierra May 1979

It was Memorial Day weekend of 1979. Jimmy Carter was still president, the economy was in recession, the Iranians still held American hostages, and former actor and Governor of California was making a run for the White House.

In the foothills of the Sierra at Chinese Camp, the Sierra Railroad was in what would be the last year of running excursions, planning on ending them on Dec. 31st. That May it seemed far away as Sierra #3, #28, and #34 are making a run for Chinese Hill. Directly behind #34 is former SP (and former Central Coast) obs car #2901.

As Maurice Chevalier once sang, "Ah yes, I remember it well."
