Many of you know that I am a Meteorologist and that I forecast for UP. In the mid 1980's I was hired by world wide construction Co. of Dilligham-Tokla who REPLACED the entire deck on the Golden Gate bridge at night so as not to disturb commute traffic. The new deck, as I remember is 18,000 tons lighter than the original 1937.
The new deckwas replaced in sections that were constructed with lighter materials. I asked the project engineer point blank on night nesar the end of the project if the GGB could support commuter rail and he said absolutely.
