Its been over a year since I've been on Donner, and with UP's changes for PSR I'll let someone else chime in here.
The Gateway Sub typically sees 4-8 trains a day. Typically 2x SB manifest and 2x NB manifest. The rest are comprised of unit grain trains, oil trains, baretables, autoracks, and occasionally extra manifests. These are all run as needed, so bit tough to know exactly what you'll end up getting aside from the regular manifests.
The FRC sees all of the Gateway Sub trains above west of Keddie plus a few UP trains. UP predominantly runs westbounds in the Canyon. The regulars are:
- MNPRV - Manifest North Platte to Roseville. Daily, and often a huge train.
- ANPMI - Autos North Platte to Milpitas. (not sure no frequency, used to be Mon-Sat)
- Canyon Crawler - Mon, Wed, Fri westbound Portola to Oroville. Tue, Thru, Sat? eastbound Oroville to Portola. On duty in the early morning.
UP runs a number of westbound loaded grain, coal, and oil trains, but these are a bit tough to predict. They can also run one of their WB stack trains through the canyon on occasion.
Donner typically has more traffic than the FRC these days, but both can be hit or miss.
For radio frequencies, Canyon Sub is 5151, and Gateway Sub is 6666.
For fun here are two albums with shots from both FRC and Gateway Sub a few weeks back (plus older trips):
