The Mococo is longer, but he line over Altamont was both exceedingly curvy and steep. The SP routed traffic via the Niles-Tracy line when it came from south of Niles or from Bayshore as a way to avoid congestion in Oakland, but the Mococo was the preferred route from Oakland to Tracy.
