The big question that I have is with the growth of traffic on the Altamont Commuter Express, when is it going to need double track? When it needs it, how is it going to get it? My idea has always been to restore the S.P. track over Altamont Pass and use it as a double-track railroad with the existing U.P. track. The people at Niles Canyon Railway say that they can continue to use the section of track that they use now on Saturdays and Sundays because the A.C.E. does not run on weekends.
