This is this a right-wing caricature of liberals which has little actual basis in reality.

Many years ago, Republican Newt Gingrich was in St. Louis when a woman asked how she was supposed to get to work without a car. Congressman Gingrich admonished her to learn how to read a bus timetable.

A few years later Republican Senator Rick Santorum got a new federal program started called Job Access Reverse Commute to link unemployed/under employed people in urban core areas with employment opportunities in suburban communities. While Santorum was staunchly opposed to welfare, at least he had some understanding of the logistical barriers people face in accessing employment opportunities.

Now much of the Republican Party is hostile towards local, state and federal funding of mass transit and have no interest in the logistics of transitioning people from unemployment/ welfare to work. It is Democrats who support federal funding for public transit. Montana Governor Steve Bullock states his support for public transit in his website even though mass transit in Montana is limited compared with transit in more urbanized states.
