Up here in the land of The Northwest Seaport Alliance, the Tacoma ocean port terminals all have direct dock - to - rail transfer capabilities, without the need for the dray haulers ( " Rail Rats " ) that are necessary at Terminal 30 & the now - closed Terminal 46 in Seattle. Even though a rail line runs just across E. Marginal Way / Alaskan Way, no access was built into these facilities. Even though Terminal 18 on Seattle's Harbor Island does have rail access & loading areas, they still use Rail Rats for much of the transfer cans to & from BNSF's Seattle International Gateway facility, and the U.P. Argo Yard facility. Meanwhile, Terminal 5 in West Seattle, which has excellent dock - to - rail capabilities withOUT blocking traffic, is currently only being used by Matson Lines to Hawaii & the Pacific Islands. Such a waste...
