Hopefully forestalling the nitpickers: yes, the full-length Surfliner runs (SLO-San Diego) are also on the order of 300 miles. Capitol Corridor is much shorter, less than 150 miles. The only one that currently comes close to hourly or better Cal-Amtrak service, at peak times, is the Capitol Corridor (essentially Sacramento-San Jose, with one train out to Auburn and many of their trains covering only Sacramento-Oakland, less than 100 miles). The Surfliner route, however, operates (except north of Ventura) in LA Metrolink and SD Coaster territories, where there are many commuter trains filling in the holes between Amtrak runs.
