You might find it interesting to look up our local Amtrak station: Olympia-Lacey Centennial Station. It was constructed by volunteers in 1993 and is still totally staffed by volunteers. There is a Wikipedia article about it. Because it is on the BNSF (and UP) double-track mainline and serves as the closest station to Olympia, the state capital, all Cascade trains and Amtrak 11 and 14 stop here. There seems to be plenty of volunteer support locally to continue the staffing.
