Well, let's see. These operating scrapyards come to mind:

• Levin in Richmond
• Schnitzer in Oakland
• American Brass & Iron in Oakland
• Alco Iron & Metal in San Leandro

There's some type of facility in San Jose, but I don't know anything about it. I believe it's operated by Sims.

And of course, there are a number of recycling centers in the Bay Area. Would you consider those to be scrap yards?

In any event, there are only a fraction of what there were 30, 40, 50 years ago. As others have mentioned in their comments, manufacturing in the Bay Area isn't what it used to be. Little manufacturing = little scrap. It's industrial evolution.

You asked in your original post about garbage trains in the Bay Area. The first proposal I know of involved Western Pacific. I don't know the particulars (it was proposed in the mid-1960's and I didn't start my career until 1971), but nothing much came of it other than a Passenger Extra that took officials on a trip to inspect the dump site.

In 1985 or there abouts, I had some peripheral involvement with a proposal for a daily garbage train to be operated by SP that would haul loaded trash containers from two (and possibly three) Waste Management transfer facilities in the East Bay (San Leandro and Richmond, and perhaps someplace in the South Bay) to a transfer site near Los Banos. The proposal called for a daily dedicated train with all rolling stock provided by the shipper and a single inter-divisional run-through crew provided by the railroad. While the shipper expressed interest in the proposal, the railroad was tepid, and nothing came of it.

The proposed Marin area garbage train was discussed here on AP. You might be able to find old posts about it by using the Search feature.
