Regarding the Portland derailment, photos I saw appear to show a several-foot deep hole (sinkhole?) under one of the units. That would imply that the ground gave way leading to the track dropping and to the derailment. The hole also caused a tilt to the right off the track and caused the unit to strike the vertical support for the roadway above.
