Another useful USGS service allows queries to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database. This is a database of place names on USGS maps, and is handy if you don't know which quadrangle covers a particular place (such as a station on a railroad line).

For example, Kekawaka, CA (on the NWP in the Eel River Canyon) is on the Jewett Rock quadrangle.
