You know that mid-day ACE train that is now running? It is funded by the State of Calif as traffic mitigation for the I-205 expansion project through Tracy. Look at the future plans for ACE trains and it shows 2 pair of mid-day trains within 5 to 10 years with 4 pair of commute hour trains. The State of California is leaning very hard on the SJRRC/ACE management to make these mid-day trains a full part of the San Joaquin train system and have them run 7 days per week. If $400-$500 million of state and regional transit funding is spent to rebuild the ex-SP Altamont/Niles Canyon line for the use of both ACE passenger trains and the proposed regional short-distance container trains between the Port of Oakland and the proposed "inland container ports" at Sacramento, Stockton, Lathrop, Crows Landing, Fresno and others, there will be huge political and economic pressure to make sure this "public investment" is being used 7 days per week and not just the 5 weekdays. Who knows what the PLA would be required to do in order to get their trains out on a rebuilt and fully signaled mainline through Niles Canyon under the control of the SJRRC/ACE/Herzog?
