Dixie Cups

In the old days when driving down the freeway in Marin I would always crane my head to catch a glimpse of good ole NWP 2472 rusting away on the sleepers (in Larkspur) and then quickly crane my way the other way to catch a glimpse of the Dixie Cup Factory at Corte Madera where the aforementioned Dixie Cups were manufactured for the entire country. If you had a soda at a baseball game, or an orange juice at a hot dog stand, back in the 70's, you were drinking it out of a Cal Northern Green & White-delivered paper cup. I always hoped to catch 2472 switching out the plant but it was always one of the G&W's blue engines with the red noses. Rudolphs I liked to call them. Or Pinocchios I called them as well, because of the red nose.
These days we all spend our time staring at our phones while driving down the freeway but in the old days you could railfan your way home! I still do that sometimes. The other day I discovered an old NWP branch to Tiburon! It fascinated the Network when I shared it with them. First they had heard of it.
