And I'll second Bruce on the great SoCal commuter options available nowadays. I was at Union Station that Monday in 1992 when the first Metrolink trains came in from each line.
BNSF's rise to dominance in Feather River Cyn. and increased service up & down the Pacific Coast; once the domain of Espee.
The third main through Cajon Pass is noteworthy, but kinda sad to me too, as it changed familiar landscapes forever.
