One of the many proposed solutions to the Tehachapi bottleneck of 100 years ago involved a new line from Saugus to Castaic, then thru present Lake Hughes to the Antelope Valley, then up thru Gorman & down Grapevine Canyon. The thinking was that potential damage from Earthquakes would be lessened by crossing the San Andreas Fault on the surface of the desert.
