During the late '70s, when I was living in El Toro but was not of age for a car or driver's license, I often walked or biked my way north on the access road, which became more of a farmer's road on the outskirts of town, to the area now occupied by the Irvine station. (Back then, Irvine was considered to be farther northwest, beyond Valencia siding, beyond where I-5 crosses the Surf Line.)The land south and west of the railroad was all fields growing strawberries, tomatoes, and who knows what else. In the distance you could still see Lion Country Safari, which eventually became home to the Irvine Meadows amphitheater. And on the northeast side of the track was, of course ETMCAS. Watching F4 Phantoms glide overhead at low altitude, especially on those days when they were doing touch-and-go landing-and-take-off practice in an oval flight path around the valley, was every bit as exciting as the less-frequent F40PHs zipping through at 90mph with Amfleet-equipped San Diegans. Hmm, that could be a subject for somebody's article some day. Where the F4 Phantoms and F40PHs once crossed paths. If only I had taken pictures of that.
