There was a similar crash (multiple fatalities - several people in the SUV) on Sacramento light rail several years ago. Somebody who was on the phone pulled out of line at a crossing with the gates down, tried to cross going the wrong way, and was hit by a light rail train going 55mph (faster than would be the case at Guerneville Rd.). Hardly confusing - straight road, no intersections at the tracks, etc. Just like Guerneville Rd. Nobody needs to be "high as a kite" to do that; excessive impatience, possibly accompanied by phone distraction (we don't know, and can't know, all of that, though they *were* found in the accident investigation in the Sacramento case so it's possible that more information will come to light later as the investigation gets done), is all that's necessary. It can look like stupidity; poor decisionmaking often does. It doesn't require chemical alteration of perceptions.
