This is the best one I've found, but not the ones I was looking for. A bit long on boring science, not for those who require dumbing down, but chock full of more "data" than you can shake a stick at, on the various factors they looked at, in grade crossing accidents.
And, on page 39 is rates for different types a grade crossing protection. The VMT and number of cars are the lowest at the unprotected, crossing bucks, and stop sign protection, but the "rates" are much higher. Although overall total accidents is very much a "function" of the kind of protection, the number of cars and lanes of traffic, and the number of choo-choo's and tracks. But, looks at factors seasonality, weather, sun glare, visibility, time of day, even the effects of daylight savings time.
