In the days of train orders and schedules, this could be done only if the DS issued orders instructing the two trains to exchange schedules, "schedules" being the technical term for "train number". However, if a train is over 12 hours late, it's schedule has expired and can be run only with a train order.

Schedules and TOs went away in 1985, and this demoted "schedule" to "wish list".
