In the past decade, it has been reviewed by BNSF/MRL twice, both times it was concluded that the traffic did not warrant it. That being said, BNSF does not want MRL in Butte as it would give them an outside connection with the UP at Silver Bow. (Allegedly soon to be operated by WATCO.)
There is a lot of work to re-open Homestake, nothing insurmountable given that traffic would warrant it.
