That did happen. On April 11, 1996 an MRL train derailed near Alberton, MT releasing chlorine gas in large quantities. The conductor (assistant engineer on MRL) quickly went back and cut the power off allowing both crew members to escape using the locomotives and survive although with injuries. A single engineer would have died before getting back to the lead engine assuming he was able to get the pin and have it stay up.
