I'd forgotten that connection with "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" finally done, as a comedy, but by the Coen Brothers, with Sullivan's Travels... It was their homage to Preston Sturges. And, Veronica Lake was one hot dame....

Great footage of the old River station, the old Pasadena Avenue overpass (where the hobo camp is under a bridge by the tracks) now at the top end off the SP Shops, next to the I-5, which was replaced with a new overpass when, they did the County Hospital trench, and of course the thief being run over by the Daylight at the still brand new LAUPT in early 1941.
