John Armstrong-designed model RR layouts

I hear references to a renowned model layout designer named John Armstrong. I'm just curious, was designing layouts sort of a side business for him? Or did he do it for free, just for the fun of it? I'm not a modeler myself, but enjoy seeing well-made layouts on Youtube.
