December 1988 was quite a month on Southern Pacific's Oregon Division. One of the biggest foamathons in history occurred when SP 4449 and a big passenger train went down the Siskiyou Line as far as Medford. At the time, who knew that in less than eight years, we would have no more SP to kick around.
After two days of intense steam chasing, we were looking for a nice change of pace. The day after the 4449 made it to the Rogue Valley, we followed a train out the Modoc Line. It was a perfect December day. The images I got of the SP 9368 on an EUASM that day are some of the best in my collection.
I have always liked this shot of the crew change at Wendel.
