In late June 1988 we took a trip to Northern Arizona to shoot on the transcon. At that time, many ATSF main line trains were running with cabooses. The story we heard at the time was that Chico was having some huge problems with their EOT devices, so it was the caboose's last stand.
These two shots in Kingman Canyon were one of the highlights of the trip.
The westman with the F45 was a 608 train, the eastman was a 951.
Both the 608 and 951 had a caboose on the rear.
