For clarity, the E8's and E9's had Automatic Forward Transition, but only the E9's had Automatic Backward Transition, so if one or more E8 was in the consist the throttle had to be closed and then reopened when slowing down, otherwise the unit would stop loading. That wasn't something that was known to enginemen who weren't familiar with the units.
