Foaming in Chico's desert, 1988

The other day, I posted a couple of June 1988 images showing two Santa Fe trains meeting in Kingman Canyon. As railfans from Oregon, one of the primary reasons we went to Arizona that summer was to shoot cowl units. Burlington Northern had purged all of their ex-Great Northern F45s, and we suspected Santa Fe's might not be going to last that much longer. At the time, rumors were flying that ATSF would ban them from leading trains.

Our first day in Arizona, we intercepted this westbound intermodal near Hackberry. We were very jazzed to get an ex-Amtrak cowl on the point of the train.

After the shooter went by, we went east to Hackberry proper. The second train after the shooter was this 608 with an F45 leading. Although the Burlington Northern SD40-2s were no great shakes to us, we appreciated getting them out of their element.

It was a good thing we had to cross the tracks to get back to our car. Otherwise, we might have missed this shot of the 608 train's caboose. I understand that this particular waycar is preserved at Escalon, California in a city park.
