Went for an afternoon walk last Friday in Point Richmond, Ca.
I was surprised to see BNSF send a crew to the bay side
of the underutilized tunnel to replace a single tie. Not
an exciting, news worthy story other than the tracks seem all
but moribund. All the more reason to avoid a derailment,
I'd guess.
For those unfamiliar, this trackage along the S.F Bay
served a few industries and car float operations until
a pier fire in 1984. It seems the railroad occasionally
sends a train through the tunnel now and again to
facilitate yard moves.
