To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Washington Union Station, Amtrak arranged to have six historic passenger diesels and ex-Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 No. 4935 displayed at the bumper posts of the grand old station October 4-5, 2008. The colorful locomotives from five different railroads brought back memories of a bygone era before today’s uniformity in paint schemes. Amtrak displayed an Acela Express trainset, a Superliner sleeper, a Superliner transition dorm/sleeper, a Superliner diner/lounge, a Viewliner sleeper, and an Amcafe car. This photo is of ex-Southern Railway E8 No. 6900, now owned by the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, and GG1 No. 4935, brought to Washington from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg, on display October 4th..
