The DEF we were using as of last year had a noticeable smell, similar to Kodak indicator stop bath concentrate but not as potent. I would think all DEF is the same, maybe people have different sensitivities or exposure experiences. I really don't like dealing with the stuff either way.
I've spilled a few drops on my skin and it was mildly irritating and I wouldn't want it in my eyes. You're right it may not be placarded as Hazmat, but it requires an MSDS and standard chemical gloves to handle. Spilled some on my boots and it didnt' wear off for weeks.
