Re: CA HWY 96 trains?

The only thing I can think of is, when the Yreka Western RR was young (very early in the 1900's) there was, (twice) a plan to expand the rails out of Yreka westward over the Forest Mountain Summit, (now called CA Hwy 3) into Scott Valley. Hence the change of the name of the railroad to the Yreka Western RR. The engineering had already been done as to how to run the rails over Forest Mountain. The blueprints are on display in the Yreka Western museum in Yrkea.

The rails would have followed Scott Valley south through Fort Jones, Etna and would have ended somewhere about half way between Etna and Callahan. There are some rails still evident along the Scott River just south of Etna, but they never did serve a train as no rails ever were laid over Forest Mountain and into Scott Valley.

A junction was planned at Fort Jones where the rails would turn west and follow the Scott River about 27 miles to the confluence with the Klamath River. The rails would continue west along the Klamath River to Happy Camp, where passenger service, logs, lumber and ore from the Gray Eagle Copper Mine would have been the main sources of revenue. The highway that passes the confluence of the rivers and continues down thru Happy Camp is CA Hwy 96.

The financial backing for the expansion of the Yreka Western to Happy Camp fell apart when the great earthquake of 1906 struck San Francisco ... the financial center which was to put up the money for the construction.

To my knowledge, there is no railroad museum anywhere along Hwy 96. Hope this helps. :)
