I heard this earlier today and what a great loss this is. John was a true gentleman who always had a smile on his face. I am blessed to say that John was a good friend of mine. Not only was John a great person but he was an excellent rail photographer as well.

I will relate one story that brings back fond memories. I can't remember exactly when, but many Winterails ago John and I both won awards in the B & W photo contest. I'm certain John won first place with his iconic shot of an SP cab-ahead thundering past the station at Altamont which was still open at the time. I asked John if he would like to exchange photos. He said "sure" so I have a beautiful 11X14 print. I will always treasure that photo since it reminds me of John. We need many more wonderful people like John to enrich our lives.
