Superliners absolutely fit through Stampede Tunnel. I rode on the Empire Builder, from Seattle to Chicago and back in June, 1980, when the Superliners were brand new. At that time, The Empire Builder's regular routing was over Stampede Pass.

It was two weeks after Mt. St. Helens erupted, and the ash was blowing like snow in the Yakima and Ritzville areas.
