I started going to Winterail in '96 "working" at the Altamont Press booth with Rob Carlson who started this website. He had a "booth"/table at Winterail to sell his incredibly wonderful timetables------they were so good that Amtrak and UP people would buy them because they were better than what the "company" put out.
Yes, Winterail is "worth it"----------it is a gathering of the "washed" and the "unwashed"-there are all kinds of people there (STeve Barry, of R&R,,TRAINS honchos)and the Ted Bensons, Shirley Steinheimer. Feather River Portola people, etc ----------and yes, there are those who need to be hosed off with sheep dip and learn to use toothpaste, soap and deodorant, but you can always move away from them and look for the rest of us who bathe, use "products" and smell pretty ok. Winterail is a "be-in"--it is well worth the trip.
So yes, absolutely, it is worth it.
