President Harding took the Milwaukee Road on his westward trip, even riding the cab of a Westinghouse EP-3 locomotive where he was said to be inspired by the locomotive's ability to supply electrical power back into the overhead catenary system during regenerative braking.

Harding died of a heart attack in San Francisco while heading back to Washington, D.C.
