Yes, car fires are common. Cars have a battery capable of high current to turn the engine over and gasoline is provided to make the situation more interesting to observers.
"Each year, from 2014 to 2016, an estimated 171,500 highway vehicle fires occurred in the United States, resulting in an annual average of 345 deaths; 1,300 injuries; and $1.1 billion in property loss. These highway vehicle fires accounted for 13 percent of fires responded to by fire departments across the nation."
If there is a problem in the Tesla battery, usually caused by driving over a large piece of metal that punctures the protection plate, the car will tell you to pull out of traffic and leave the car. Of course if one hits the abutment at high speed one will have other problems no matter the source of propulsion.
