If the companies that merged to form the new entity were a bit sketchy, then you want to call attention to the date of the new start - that this isn't what went before. If, on the other hand, the companies that merged had a good reputation, then you want to call attention to that heritage - that this is a continuation of what went before. BNSF is doing the latter.
