FELA stands for Federal Employer's Liability Act, the "Federal" part meaning its a Federal Law, not the govmint as an employer. It predates worker's compensation laws by a considerable amount of time. Under the FELA system, an injured employee must sue for compensation; under worker's comp, compensation is automatic according to predetermined formulae: so much for an arm, so much for a leg, etc. The rule of thumb is "Get injured under FELA, keep your house. Get injured under Worker's Comp, lose your house."
