FWIW, NJ Transit at one time ran a train from NYP to Atlantic City. Electric on one end, diesel on the other, connected for push-pull operation. Electric with diesel dead NY to Philly. Dropped the pan. Started the diesel, went to Atlantic City. On the return, the reverse. If the active power was pushing, the dead power was the cab car.
They don't have to do that any more (if they were to do a NY-Atlantic City run. NJT now has some dual-power locomotives that are both diesel and electric. So it would be a normal push-pull op with a cab car at one end, and conversion between electric and diesel can be done on the move rather than at a station. Similar operation to the old FL9's on NY commuter trains.
Didn't MILW have electrics as helpers on diesel freight trains? Certainly, they did with steam.
