I have no idea where you worked in transit, but you've never met me or my colleagues. I care deeply about the transit system for which I work and public transit in general. I know that most of my coworkers really do care if our transit system is any good.
I've worked a lot of evenings and weekends. Even when out and about when not at work I will look at buses to see how many people are riding. If there is a bus stop with something wrong I will take a photo and/or send an e-mail to the staff responsible for addressing the issue. In social situations, I'll listen to people's complaints about the transit system.
I've even taken the time to argue with BOB2 about transit on AP.
I got the job by responding to an advertisement in an engineering magazine. I moved from one city to my current city not knowing anyone who was responsible for hiring me. Did not know or "blow" anyone.
