It's a branding / marketing thing.
For about a dozen years now, Austria's premier intercity long distance trains have operated under the brand "Railjet." These specially-painted fixed-consist trains operate push-pull at speeds up to 140 mph == where suitable infrastructure is available -- and also operate into neighboring countries, including Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.
(For more information, search RailJet on Wikipedia.)
Some Austrian commuter services have since been branded CityJet, with the introduction of new EMU equipment.
So, with Austria taking on long-distance sleeper trains previously operated by other entities, it made sense -- to someone -- to brand these as NightJet trains.
