Anyone know what class of cab forward had the "ungluing" problem to which I referred in this thread? Was it an AC 4-5-6, or 7,8,10,11,12? I have not had the luxury of reading the books on this territory. What I remember of the story is that a cab forward south of Ashland was having water injection problems, and the fireman went down the catwalk to see what the problem was, and suddenly realized that where he was standing was normally a tighter squeeze. He looked down toward the frame and could see a huge crack in the frame. What kept it from being a nasty wreck was that the rearward engine, due to a changing of the reverse gear positioning from the crack kept slack bunched on the front engine. Once the problem was identified, the engineer just shut down the throttle and let the train roll to a stop. It could have been much worse. I seem to recall that cab forwards of all classes had occasional problems with tunnels on sharp curves from the articulation overhang on the front cab cornerposts making contact with the tunnel's wooden support members. I would assume this included marker lamps as well. It would be marvelous to see 4294 run anywhere she could or would be allowed to. Some research on this would be interesting.
