Class I rail lines carloands dropped 34.5% during the Nov. 15 week for hauls of high-value motor vehicles and other equipment, to 14,642 loads. That was after a 31 percent drop the week of Nov. 8. Metals and related products - fell 37.7% to 7,758 units hauled, after a 30.6 percent drop as of Nov. 8 from the 2007 week. Waste and scrap fell 31.7 % to 6,982, and were down 40 percent the week before that. When these pick up they are an early sign of manufacturing increases since manufacturers buy these cheaper materials when production resumes. We are in for a bumpy ride for the next few quarters.
