As for the term, it is Locomotive Engineer, has been since 1985 when the union for Locomotive Running Branch personnel reorganised into the LEA, formerly known as the Enginedrivers, Fireman and Cleaners Association, the EF&CA. That had taken sometime since the last of the cleaner boys would have been in the late 60's, and the Firemen were termed as Loco Assistants after the fires were dropped in '71.

However some still refer to themselves as Enginedriver's, since down here Engineer(s) refer to those of the Civil type designing/building various structures.
