Articulation is a mixed blessing. In some types of accidents it helps keep the train together and keeps cars from turning over. On the other hand, if the derailment is off a bridge or down into a ravine, the first pieces of rolling stock that derail pull the rest of the train down with them.

On the whole, SNCF was reasonably lucky with this derailment. Now, they will have to see if there was sufficient monitoring of the stability of the slopes in this and similar cuts.
