Great Locomotive Nicknames Over the Years
-------------------------------------------------------
> What are the great named locomotives of all time? What makes for a great locomotive name?
Jupiter comes to mind as a great name for a locomotive present at a historic occasion. Of course referring to the Golden Spike of 1869 in Utah.
John Bull is another one. Was built was the first railroad in New Jersey and pulled the first woman to ever ride a train as a passenger in the United States, although at that time keep in mind, the U.S. did not include the states of California, New Mexico, Oregon, Arizona, or Texas.
Here's a
Trains article on the subject:
"Jupiter" and other engine names [
cs.trains.com]. It doesn't mention "Tom Thumb" [
www.google.com].
This list of US steam locomotives includes some by name: [
