I don't think it was because of the boilers, all the commute power had boilers.

I think it was the fact that they had to Huff and Puff to keep trains on schedule when they filled in. I grew up in San Jose, only saw them in commute service a couple of times.

If I recall correctly, I never heard the name until the Interweb era
