Many of SP's SD9s came equipped with steam generators for use on passenger trains.

When the SD9E rebuild program was performed, all the generators were removed except from 4450 and 4451, which retained theirs for support service on the Peninsular Commute line. As I understand, this was when they got the nicknames. Yes, all the commute power until CalTrain had steam generators, but they were the only 2 SD9s to retain generators and regularly work the commute line.
